The school board will vote Monday at 7 p.m to determine if Principal Tonya King’s denial of junior Jim Stack request to grow his hair will stand.
“Donating my hair to Locks of Love is a very special project to me.” Stack said.
Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that gives wigs to those who’ve lost their hair to chemotherapy, like stacks sister, which has inspired him to grow his hair out and donate to the organization.
“There are other ways Jim could help the Locks of Love group. he could have a fundraiser and donate the money.” King said.
Although she denied Stack’s request to grow his hair out, the principal is willing to help organize a fundraiser where Stack can donate the money to Locks of Love.
“I’m told a lot of people donate money, but not many donate hair.” Stack said.
As reasoning behind his great determination to grow his hair out so he can help other people like his little sister.
“We desperately need human hair for our wigs.” Gisel Roco, President of Locks of Love said.
The organization turns down 150 of the 200 requests they receive monthly, leaving lots and lots children and adults without wigs.
“I hope the board approves my request.” Says Stack.
The issue has been put into the hands of the school board as King has denied his request to grow his hair and Stack decided to write a letter to the school board, requesting permission to grow his hair long enough to meet the required length for donation.
“Had I approved Jim’s request, then i would have students every day asking if they also break dress code.” King said.
King says she disapproved of Stack’s request as an attempt to prevent other kids from asking daily if they could also break the dress code, which would result in chaos throughout the school.
“I can’t comment on this issue now.” School Board President,Bill Valdez said.
Valdez claims Stack’s letter was well-written and had some good points, but the issue will be discussed Monday at the School Board meeting.
